It's the beginning of a new year and lots of people are creating their life list-a list of things they want to accomplish during their lifetime, as well as places they want to visit, books they want to read, and so on--or adding items to an already existing list. One item that is popular on life lists-and which you should consider adding to yours-is attending Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. As you'll discover by reading this article, it's much more than just a food fair.
The original "Oktoberfest" occurred in Munich, Surefire g2 flashlight Germany in 1810 to commemorate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig--later King Ludwig I--and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Today, it's a sixteen-day festival that runs each year from late September to early October. It's the world's largest fair, with approximately six million people attending each year.
Visitors eat large amounts of the food that is traditional to the German region of Bavaria. This includes Schweinsbraten (roast pork), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), assorted Bavarian cheeses, Würstl (sausages), and, of course, Sauerkraut (finely shredded cabbage that has been fermeted by bacteria) and Weisswurst (a white sausage).
Another important item in the Oktoberfest festivities is beer. In fact, the festival begins when the mayor of Munich taps the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at the Schottenhamel tent and proclaims "O'zapft is!" ("It is tapped!"). The first mug of beer is then passed on to the prime-minister of Bavaria and then all the beer tents can start selling beer.
There are currently fourteen main tents to choose from. These tents are non-permanent structures which are constructed exclusively for use during the festival. The biggest tent is the Hofbräu Tent. Other tents include the Löwenbräu Tent, which has a huge animated lion at the entrance, and the Hacker-Pschorr Tent, which has the slogan "The Bavarian's piece of heaven".
Generally, you don't need a reservation to get into the beer tents. However, during peak hours, and with large groups, it can be next to impossible to get a seat. In addition, most tents won't serve you beer if you're not seated. Therefore, it's important to choose a tent and get there early in the day. Although it's possible to get reservations before-hand, you usually have to do this by the month of March.
